Southeast Hosting 34th Annual Math Field Day
(Academic)
The Southeast Missouri State University Department of Mathematics will host students from 24 area high schools to compete in the 34th annual Math Field Day Tuesday, April 17. The event begins at 9 a.m. and concludes with an awards ceremony at 1 p.m. Team events begin at 9:30 a.m., while individual testing will be held from 10:10 to 11:30 a.m. At noon, students will engage in a problem-solving event, Mathletics. All events will take place in the Show Me Center. A new award, The Sigma Award, will be given beginning this year. A trophy will be given to both a large school and a small school to recognize two schools as the all-around winner in their division. To determine the winner, points will be awarded to those individuals and teams earning first, second and third places for each event. During the awards ceremony, the school in the each division with the greatest total points will receive the Sigma Award trophy. Approximately 537 students will compete in a multitude of areas including algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry, word problems, sets and logic, exponential and log functions, matrices and determinants, computational mathematics, elementary data analysis, probability, mental arithmetic, non-routine problem solving, analytic geometry, number bases, number theory, hand calculators and calculus.
