Redhawk Equestrian Team Meet
(Entertainment)
Southeast Missouri State University’s equestrian team will host its first ever home competition with an Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Meet March 10-11 at Cape Fox Run Stables. “Anyone who is interested is more than welcome to come out and help support the Redhawk Equestrian Team in our first home competition,” said Kristie Miller of Geneseo, Ill., vice president of the Southeast Equestrian Team, which is a club sport at Southeast. The Southeast equestrian team is in its second year and is led by Coach SuAnne Remley. The Redhawks, who practice at Cape Fox Run Stables just north of Cape Girardeau, have eight riders competing in IHSA shows. “After our first six shows this year, we are placed sixth overall out of 10 teams in our region who compete in English and already have three riders qualified individually for regionals, which are held at the end of the season,” Miller said. The three qualified for regionals in either walk/trot or walk/trot/canter are: Kellie Constantin of Eureka, Mo., Alex Wolf of St. Peters, Mo., and Miller. The regional competition includes riders from across the Missouri/Illinois region and is held at the end of the season. The top two riders in each class at regionals will move on to zone, where they will compete against riders from four other regions in the zone. The Redhawks compete in Zone 7 which includes 60 other colleges from North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. The top two riders in each class at zones will move on to nationals, held at the Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh, N.C. Last year, the Redhawks had five riders competing in IHSA shows. The team placed sixth overall in the region out of nine other teams. Two Redhawk riders qualified for regionals. Angie Stroer of St. Peters, Mo., placed fourth in walk/trot/canter and Miller placed second in walk/trot. Miller then went on to compete at zone and made it to the 2011 IHSA Nationals at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky. She placed 10th out of 16 riders who made it to nationals individually in walk/trot. The IHSA is open to all full-time students at colleges with IHSA teams. Currently 385 colleges compete in the IHSA across the United States and parts of Canada. “The idea is that any student who wants to compete in competitive horse showing should be given the opportunity to do so,” Miller said. “This is achieved by multiple levels of competition, from walk/trot to open level fences and flat.” For more information on the team, visit wix.com/redhawkequestrian/team, or watch videos at http://www.youtube.com/user/RedhawkEquestrian.
