Extravaganza Benefiting Department of Theatre and Dance
(Fine Arts)
Participants will have the opportunity to help send Southeast Missouri State University senior performing arts students to Broadway at the Department of Theatre and Dance’s exclusive evening Extravaganza Jan. 28 in downtown Cape Girardeau. The event will begin with a 5 p.m. social, followed by 6 p.m. musical performances at Celebrations Downtown & The Crowe Gallery, 19 Spanish Street. For one night only, those who attend will have a chance to mingle with the cast of “The Pajama Game.” The evening also will include a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The silent auction will benefit the Senior Showcase, a cabaret for graduating seniors. The Senior Showcase, to be held in the spring, assists in professionally promoting seniors who have completed a degree in performing arts. “The Department of Theatre & Dance produces two annual senior showcases -- one in Cape Girardeau in the Wendy Kurka Rust Flexible Theatre and one in New York City,” said Dr. Kenn Stilson, interim chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. “The local showcase is a wonderful evening of theatre targeted toward family, friends, and the general public displaying the talents of our graduating seniors. The New York Showcase is an invitation only private presentation to top industry professionals -- casting directors, agents, managers --with the purpose of launching the careers of our most talented graduating seniors. The Extravaganza is a wonderful evening of entertainment, silent auction, food and drinks, as well as a chance to meet the graduating class, and it serves as our primary fundraiser to help these talented students with travel and housing for their trip to New York City in May.” Sponsors of the Extravaganza are Southeast Health, Saxony Village Retirement Community, Rhodes 101 Convenience Stores, Commerce Bank, BOLD Market!ng and Eustis Studios. Tickets are $50 per person. Seating is limited. Those attending are asked to RSVP by Jan. 21.
