Transition Spaces Series - Kathy Smith: Transition Spaces 12.1
(Fine Arts)

The public is invited to attend an opening reception from 4-8 p.m. May 4, with a gallery talk by the artist at 5 p.m. Smith's exhibition will be on display April 24-June 17, 2012. The event is free and open to the public.

Smith's Transition Spaces exhibition will consist of a new series of paintings and drawings exploring her favorite films. Her development of a painting or drawing is first to photograph the film "moments." Then, the shots are edited until an image is found with which she directly connects.

The works in this exhibition use color or the lack of it as a way to dramatize light or enhance the expressionist aspect of the images, she said.

The process of recreating a film still is highly personal, and once started, the image takes on a life of its own.
