'Classic Creole' Cookbook Author to Hold Book Signing and Food Demonstration at Southeast
(Entertainment)
Ann Cuiellette Marr, author of the recently published “Classic Creole: A Celebration of Food and Family” cookbook published by the Southeast Missouri State University Press, will spice up the Southeast Missouri State University campus at a book signing and food demonstration April 21.
The event will take place from noon to 1 p.m. in the Lounge on the third floor of the University Center. The signing and demonstration is open to the public. Copies of the book will be for sale for $21 or $15 for students with a current Southeast ID.
Marr will demonstrate how to make her New Orleans Bread Pudding and serve samples to the audience.
“Working with Ann to put together this fantastic collection of New Orleans recipes has been a very delicious delight. The recipes are easy to prepare. Ann’s energy and enthusiasm are boundless, and she is fearless: she garnered a spot on the CBS ‘Early Show’ where they showed our book cover on national television. That was a thrill!” said Dr. Susan Swartwout, publisher of the University Press.
Marr, vice president of human resources with World Wide Technology, Inc., is a native of New Orleans who grew up in a large, Creole family—the 12th of 13 children. All of the dishes in the cookbook are family recipes, but each includes a story about Marr’s experience with that dish growing up in a household filled with love, energy, camaraderie and great food.
Main dish recipes featured in the book include New Orleans Creole Gumbo, Jambalaya, Red Beans Rice, Mother’s Fried Chicken, New Orleans Shrimp Po Boy, Stuffed Crabs and many others. The book also includes recipes for several appetizers and side dishes, including Rosemary Potatoes, New Orleans Potato Salad, Stuffed Mushrooms and Homemade Biscuits. Dessert recipes include New Orleans Bread Pudding, Sweet Potato Pie, Calas and others.
When Marr was featured today on CBS’ “The Early Show” in March, she prepared authentic Creole dishes. She also has done a cooking demonstration featured on WGN in Chicago’s “Lunchbreak” program, and her book has been highlighted in the “St. Louis Business Journal” and the “St. Louis Post-Dispatch.”
In addition to devoting time to her cooking, Marr is also chair of the WWT Charitable Foundation and is very active in the St. Louis community. She serves on the board of the St. Louis Minority Business Council, Focus St. Louis, the Urban League of Greater St. Louis and St. Louis Forum. Marr holds a bachelor of arts degree in human resources management from Webster University.
