BioKyowa Visiting Scholar to Present Lecture
Dr. Hisao Tanaka, the recipient of this year’s BioKyowa Visiting Japanese Scholar award at Southeast Missouri State University’s Center for Faulkner Studies, will present a lecture on Nobel Prize-winning author William Faulkner on Wednesday, Feb. 9. The lecture, “Two American Dreamers and Patricides:  Faulkner’s Inner Conflict in the Delineation of Thomas Sutpen and Flem Snopes,” will be presented at 3:30 p.m. in the Reading Room of the third floor lounge in Kent Library.  There is no admission fee, and the public is invited. Tanaka is currently professor of English at Fukuyama University.  A former president of the William Faulkner Society of Japan, he is also professor emeritus of Hiroshima University, where he taught from 1980 until 2009. Tanaka’s visit to the Center for Faulkner Studies is being sponsored by BioKyowa, Inc., a manufacturing plant in Cape Girardeau with headquarters in Japan.  He is the 12th Japanese scholar brought by BioKyowa to the Southeast campus to conduct research in the University’s Louis Daniel Brodsky Collection of Faulkner materials.  His current research topic is Faulkner’s movie scripts. Tanaka is the author of The Tapestry of Proliferation: The World of Faulkner’s Fiction and co-editor of A Reader’s Encyclopedia of William Faulkner.  He has also published additional books on American literature and has authored articles on Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, William Styron, Carson McCullers, Toni Morrison and other writers. He was a Fulbright Exchange Student at the University of Virginia from 1976-1978 and returned to Charlottesville in 1985 on a research grant from the American Council of Learned Societies.  He is the first scholar to receive the BioKyowa award a second time, having previously visited the Faulkner Center in 2002. Tanaka’s visit to the Southeast campus is being hosted by Dr. Robert Hamblin, the director of the Center, and Toshihiko Hirao, the president of BioKyowa.
