15th Annual Joseph H. Low Lecture: "First Amendment - Who and What Gets Protected"
(Lecture Series)
The director of communications and public policy with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Illinois will discuss the “First Amendment – Who and What Gets Protected” at the 15th Annual Joseph H. Low Lecture Nov. 4 at Southeast Missouri State University.
The Department of Communication Studies will present the lecture featuring Ed Yohnka at 7 p.m. in Glenn Auditorium of Dempster Hall. The event is free and open to the public; it is made available through the Low Lecture Fund – a part of the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.
Yohnka is the primary spokesperson for the most prominent civil rights and civil liberties’ advocacy organization in Illinois with more than 23,000 members. Prior to his current position, he served on the staff of the American Bar Association and continues to work with that organization in a volunteer capacity. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Yohnka appears regularly on television and radio programs in Illinois and throughout the nation to speak out on a myriad of issues, ranging from racial profiling and the inequities of the criminal justice system to matters relating to religious liberty and Internet privacy. He is known for directing and executing detailed media plans around organizational campaigns and litigation, including framing issues in the context of current public debates, drafting talking points, preparing spokespersons, appearing in the media, drafting press releases, writing and placing opinion pieces and other duties.
