'60 Minutes' Photojournalist Speaking at Southeast Oct. 29

Dan Bussell, photojournalist for CBS News’ “60 Minutes” and a Southeast Missouri State University alumnus, will discuss his work with “60 Minutes” during a presentation on campus Oct. 29.

Bussell will speak from 10 to 10:50 a.m. in Rose Theatre. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Bussell, of Warwick, N.Y., will be on campus to receive an Alumni Merit Award to be presented by the Alumni Association of Southeast Missouri State University later that evening. The award will be presented at the Copper Dome Society/Merit Recognition Program as part of the Homecoming celebration. Since 1958, Alumni Merit Awards have been presented to Southeast graduates who have brought distinction to themselves and the University.

Bussell, a St. Louis, Mo., native, graduated from Southeast in 1984 with a major in mass communication: radio/television in the College of Liberal Arts.

While working in New York for “60 Minutes,” Bussell's assignments have included the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has worked investigations on terrorist cells in Pakistan and the Yakooza in Japan (Japanese Mafia).  His work has allowed him to travel extensively, visiting Korea, American Samoa, France, London,  Norway, India, Pakistan, Brazil, Mexico, Haiti, the Grand Cayman, the British Virgin Islands, Canada, Jordan, Iraqi, Pakistan, Japan and most states throughout the nation.

He has profiled and interviewed many politicians throughout his career, including President Obama and former Presidents George W. Bush, Clinton, George Bush, Carter and Reagan. He has interviewed numerous entertainers, including Bruce Springsteen, Kris Kristofferson, Tony Bennett, Barbara Clark, Rikki Lee Jones and the late Michael Jackson. He also has profiled major athletes, including Lebron James, Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter, Joe Torre and Lawrence Taylor.

Over the years, Bussell has received Emmy, Peabody and National Press Photographers Association awards recognizing his excellence in television photojournalism. Throughout his career, Bussell’s favorite stories are those that help people -- advancements in medicine and those that bring the viewer closer to someone they may have never met. Bussell likes to quote the founder of “60 Minutes,” Don Hewitt, “Just tell me a story.”  Bussell says he has spent 25 years in the business helping tell the visual story.
