American Chamber Players Performing Oct. 31 at River Campus
(Fine Arts)

The Department of Music at Southeast Missouri State University has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to fund performances and a master class by the American Chamber Players, with Miles Hoffman as artistic director.

The American Chambers Players will perform at 3 p.m. Oct. 31 in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall as part of the River Campus’s Sundays @ Three Chamber Music series.

The American Chamber Players is a national instrumental ensemble formed in 1985 by member Miles Hoffman from a core group of artists of The Library of Congress Summer Chamber Festival. The six members of the ensemble perform a repertoire ranging from familiar masterpieces to newly commissioned American works. Their programs have been praised as “fascinating and delightful” with varied instrumental combinations praised enthusiastically as “extraordinary and dynamic performances” by the National Arts Club.

The Players have toured extensively throughout North America and have traveled to Paris for a series of special gala concerts at the Paris Opera and the Bibliothèque Nationale. They have been heard countless times on National Public Radio's ”Performance Today” and on local radio stations throughout the United States. The Players also frequently travel to perform at children’s programs, classes and master classes in schools and universities across the country.

Christopher Goeke, chair for the Southeast Department of Music, says “This is a great opportunity for our students to learn from some of the best professionals in the field and for the community to hear world-class chamber music.”

The NEA grant is designed to focus on identifying and supporting model programs and projects that provide in-depth knowledge, skills, and understanding of the arts to youth in schools and communities.

“The NEA grant enables a rare opportunity for Southeast to bring The American Chamber Players to Cape Girardeau for performances and a master class. They will also make appearances with local schools. Without the Grant, these events would not be possible,” Goeke said.
