Vocalist Terry Barber to Perform Concert of Art, Folk Songs
(Fine Arts)

Noonan-Barber

The Department of Music at Southeast Missouri State University presents vocalist Terry Barber in a concert of art and folk songs on Monday, Sept. 27, at the River Campus.

The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall.

An internationally acclaimed countertenor, Barber has performed throughout Europe and across the United States. Comfortable in a wide variety of musical styles, Barber has performed operatic roles with the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, at the International Spoletto Festival and in Carnegie Hall.

Barber has sung and recorded Baroque music with New Trinity Baroque as well as popular songs with a wide variety of musicians. As a member of the multiple Grammy-winning ensemble Chanticleer, Barber was singled out by a reviewer as  “...the jewel in Chanticleer’s crown...” With them, he worked his way through the repertoire, performing opera, classical, gospel, jazz and folk music in a dozen languages at over 100 concerts around the globe. A review in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution noted that  “...his grasp of the texts and elegant phrasing made for charismatic singing" while the Los Angeles Times praised his "performances of great vitality and verve."

Reflecting Barber's broad interests and repertoire, this special program titled "Vignettes: Art Song and Folk Song, Romantic to Modern" includes music by masters of the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical eras as well as settings by some of America's great modern composers. Works include lute songs by John Dowland and Giulio Caccini, arias by Handel and Purcell, and lieder by Schubert and Brahms. Barber will sing folk song settings by Aaron Copland as well as excerpts from Leonard Bernstein's “Mass” and “Candide.”

Barber will be accompanied on this program by Jeffrey Noonan, associate professor of music at Southeast.
