History

The University Center was added to Southeast’s campus due to rapid growth and expansion during the 1950s and 1960s. In May of 1963, students voted to assess themselves an additional $5 fee to fund a new student union. In 1969, a committee of students, faculty and staff began to put together all of the necessary groundwork for the building. Construction began in the summer of 1973, and the facility was completed in 1975. The new union provided students with over 101,000 square feet of space, almost four times the size of the original union in Memorial Hall.
