University of Illinois Professor Discussing Family Health Communication
(Lecture Series)

Family health communication is the subject of the 17th annual Low Lecture, hosted by the Department of Communication Studies Nov. 1 at Southeast Missouri State University.

Dr. Lauren Weiner, from the University of Illinois will present this year’s lecture at 6 p.m. in Glenn Auditorium of Dempster Hall. Her presentation will focus on how families create a “new normal” when coping with illness. The event is free and open to the public.

The Low Lecture series has been made possible by a generous endowment from Mildred Low in honor of her son, Joe, who was a professor at Southeast Missouri State University from 1962 to 1998. The lecture annually brings distinguished leaders and scholars in communication to our campus.

The lecturer, Weiner, is the program coordinator and academic advisor for the Health Communication Online Master of Science (HCOM) Program at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. She received her doctoral degree from Northwestern University in 2009. Weiner's research interests center around the topics of family communication and health, specifically, communication dynamics of families of pediatric cancer survivors, family communication pertaining to genetic risks and disclosure of genetic illness, and the influence of family communication dynamics on members' health-related behaviors.

Weiner is a member of the National Communication Association and the International Communication Association. In addition to giving numerous presentations, she has also been published in “Communication Yearbook,” “Journal of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology,” and the book “Communication for Families in Crisis.”
