"Birds and Birding in Ecuador:
Trouble on the Horizon?"
Wednesday, Oct. 17 ——— Noon Sadie’s Place in Kent LibrarySadie’s Library
Problems the avifauna in Ecuador are facing and will face in the future include habitat loss due to mineral extraction and development, needs of subsistence farmers and past land policies, and climate change.
Ecuador has the highest known bird diversity of any comparable area in the world, tallied at between 1600 and 1700 species (as opposed to roughly 700 for the whole of North America).
Likely reasons for this diversity are a benign climate, extreme altitudinal variation in a small region (sea level to over 18,000 feet), and matching diversity of habitats.
This presentation will discuss many of the species seen by Dr. Eddleman and his companions in January 2012, some of the sites visited in northern Ecuador, and conservation issues with these birds.
