Ghost Storytellers to Spin Chilling Tales at River Campus

Southeast Missouri State University and the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau are partnering on “An Afternoon and Evening of Ghost Storytelling: Where the River Turns a Thousand Chilling Tales” Saturday, Oct. 13, in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at Southeast’s River Campus.
The Ghost Storytelling event, now in its fifth year, will be indoors for the first time this year. It previously had been held on the River Campus lawn. Shows will be held at 2 and 7 p.m., and each show will feature unique content.
Stacy Dohogne Lane, director of Public Relations for the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau, said, “For our tried and true storytelling fans, moving the event inside will be an adjustment, but we are confident it will be a positive move overall.”
Bob Cerchio, at the River Campus, agreed. "While sitting on a hay bale under a tent is kind of an adventure, the weather has, at times, made it too much of an adventure!" said Cerchio. "Moving this inside the intimate Bedell Performance Hall should prove to be a more comfortable, and ultimately more enjoyable, experience."
People can expect to see the oldest art form of storytelling alive and well in an appropriately “eery” setting.
This is the first year the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau and Southeast have partnered on the event.
“We think it’s going to take storytelling in Cape Girardeau to a whole new level!” Lane said.
Storytellers will be Megan Hicks from Australia and Brian “Fox” Ellis from Ohio.
“We bring in some of the very best storytellers in the business,” Lane said. “These folks travel the world and are celebrities in their own right, sharing their craft.”
Hicks has a way with words. Her sense of humor and deep respect for everybody who is now or ever was a kid, makes her an award-winning performer who captivates audiences of all ages and all walks of life.
Through Ellis’ work, he seeks to erase some of the boundaries separating culture and individuals. He feels that it is through personal narrative, people see their “self” and their relationship to the world.
“It only makes sense that our stories be told to expand our awareness of each other, to emphasize our similarities and celebrate our differences,” he has said.
Ellis is a dynamic teller who, in a warmly entertaining manner, captures what is most life-affirming and beautiful in the human experience.
