Standing Ovation
(Fine Arts)
The Southeast Missouri Music Academy will present its 13th annual “Standing Ovation” benefit concert at 4 p.m. Nov. 11 in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus. “We always try to program a variety of music for the ‘Standing Ovation’ program, and this year’s concert will be no exception,” said Rebecca Fulgham, director of the Music Academy. Featured vocalists from the Department of Music will be Leslie Jones and Lori Shaffer performing “Leslie and Lori Do Lerner and Loewe.” Sara Edgerton and Paul Thompson will also perform some beautiful Chinese music for cello and piano, and Patrick Rafferty will share some guitar music. “Standing Ovation” falls on Veterans Day this year, so an added feature will be a Veterans Day tribute featuring trumpeters Marc Fulgham and Matt Martin with Music Academy Boy Scouts presenting the colors. All veterans will be recognized. The Music Academy will also showcase some of its own stars, including students from the Suzuki Strings program and Wesley Garner, who will play music by Claude Debussy on piano. Also, Music Academy student-teachers Ethan Flood and Trevor Smith will play some jazz. Following the concert, a reception with hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and a live auction will be held at Ray’s Plaza Conference Center, located at 3257 William St. in Cape Girardeau. Available items at the auction will be a two-night stay at the Crowne Plaza in downtown St. Louis, which will include parking and breakfast, wine baskets from Primo Vino and Lori Shafer, books by local authors, event tickets and a spa package. New this year will be a special children’s auction, with auctioneer Elizabeth Shelton, featuring “kid-priced” items. “Standing Ovation” is the largest fundraiser for the Music Academy, which has provided music lessons to people of all ages in the community since 1985. The concert helps the Music Academy, which is funded solely by tuition and donations, offer scholarships and tuition waivers for financially disadvantaged students. Music Academy students typically study for 30 minutes per week and get to showcase their work in area retirement centers, nursing homes, hospitals and other outlets. Tickets Are On Sale Now.
