Crisp Museum Presenting 'Amelia Earhart, Live!'
(Fine Arts)

A visiting scholar will take her audience back to 1937 with an historical performance when she presents “Amelia Earhart, Live” Feb. 16 at Southeast Missouri State University.

The presentation is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast's River Campus.

The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Ann Birney, performing as Earhart, will take the audience back to 1937 and talk about her thrilling flights. She wrecked her twin-engine Lockheed Electra taking off from Hawaii when first setting out to fly around the world. She is waiting for her airplane, her silver “flying laboratory” to be repaired so she can try again.

Birney’s interpretation of Earhart is based on extensive research. She holds a doctorate in American Studies from the University of Kansas and, like Earhart, is a native Kansan. Birney has been doing her Chautauqua-style performances of Amelia Earhart since 1995. In March of 2000 she became the first person to do an historical performance for the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, where she was described as “what living history should be -- accurate, natural, evocative, and accessible.”

The Crisp Museum is located in the Cultural Arts Center at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus, located at 518 S. Fountain St. in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. on weekends. For more information, call (573) 651-2260.
