Benefits of Music Topic of COMMrades' Spring 2012 Speakers Series
(Lecture Series)
How music benefits cognitive, physical and psychological health and ways to derive those benefits will be the topic at the COMMrades’ Spring 2012 Speakers Showcase at noon Jan. 25 in the University Center Ballroom at Southeast Missouri State University. The speaker at the Showcase will be Matthew Mason of Du Quoin, Ill. Mason is a freshman accounting major and a graduate of Du Quoin High School. He is the son of Michael and Donna Mason. Mason originally completed his speech for SC105, “Fundamentals of Oral Communication,” in the fall of 2011. He was selected from a pool of more than 450 students to deliver his speech at the event, which generally draws 200 students, faculty administrators and parents. Mason was chosen to present his speech during the showcase to demonstrate effective speechmaking for students currently enrolled in SC105. Dr. Glenn Williams, interim chair of the Department of Communication Studies and professor of communication studies, who oversees the event, says the speech is “nicely researched and structured” and the speaker “increases our appreciation of music by exploring recent findings by researchers as well as recent events where music’s healing powers have been seen, such as in the case of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.” The Showcase has been held every semester since spring 2002. The speech and following discussion provide a good model for newly enrolled students. The event is open to the public for anyone interested in public speaking. The event is sponsored by COMMrades, the Department of Communication Studies and numerous businesses in Cape Girardeau, including Wehrenberg Cape West 14 Cine, Buffalo Wild Wings, Horizon Screen Printing, Concepts Styling Salon, Calix Coffeebar and Annie Laurie’s Antiques.
